Xiaomi did not spend much on advertising.
Everyone is aware of India's No.1 Smartphone brand- Mi. Many people didn't know about the Chinese company until the release of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 which was a massive success. It captured the Indian mobile phone market.
How did they do that? The answer is of course their price. Mi phones are very cheap and affordable with pretty good quality in that price segment. Before their arrival, there was the high-end phone category that had desirable specs high price and another was the low-end category for the lower price segment.
Mi phones started giving phones with attractive spec sheets, like, 4gb RAM, Snapdragon 800, etc and the price was low as well. Also, Xiaomi products were durable and could be used for a long time.
So, how did the company achieve this price range? First, let us understand why others cost us more. Suppose, it takes $100 for a company to make a phone. They can sell it for $150 or $200. But it goes as high as $300 or more. This is not because the company is greedy but because the company spends heavily on advertising and marketing. So much that to recover these costs they have to sell them at a high price. Well, Xiaomi started with something different. They didn't spend much on advertising. That is why most people didn't know about Mi 3 at the time it was launched in India. But Mi Note 4 was very popular because Mi 3 users recommended them to everyone. This is the power of mouth that Mi used.
Xiaomi spent so less on advertising that they could cut off the price and sell at a cheaper price. Their main focus was to sell it through their website and depend on mouth publicity to expand. And it worked. People were happy to use a durable phone at less price and recommended it to all their friends who wanted to buy a low budget phone. This made the company extremely famous within a few years.
They also had their flash sales which attracted a lot of customers. They used this strategy to take over the market and now has become a significant brand in India. Now they are spending money on marketing to hold their place in the market.
